It's Too Darn Hot!

Ever wondered why we call the hottest part of summer the “dog days”?
It’s not just because we’re all panting like pups in the heat! The phrase actually goes way back—to ancient stargazers and a very famous celestial canine.
Dog Star... Are you Sirius?
In Greek mythology, Sirius was the trusty dog of the hunter Orion. The Romans, gazing up at the sky, noticed that this super-bright star (part of the Canis Major constellation, aka the “Greater Dog”) would rise in the sky right alongside the sun during the year’s steamiest stretch. They named this blazing-hot season the dies caniculares—or “days of the dog star.”
By the 1500s, English speakers were calling it simply the “dog days,” and the name stuck.
But here’s the cool twist: because of a slight wobble in Earth’s rotation, the timing of Sirius’s big summer debut has slowly shifted. Back in the day, the ancient Egyptians tied the star’s rising to the life-giving flood of the Nile—an astronomical heads-up that harvest season was near.
So the next time you’re wilting in the summer sun, just remember: it’s not just the heat. It’s history, mythology, astronomy—and one very hot dog.
