At Lois Lane Properties we Love Where We Work.

When I was in school at the College of Charleston I studied hard and dreamed of getting a job on Broad Street.  Like so much of the city in the late 1970's - early 1980's, Broad Street seemed sleepy, a bit decrepit, very romantic, and I adored it!   I loved late night walks down these dark alleys and rustic streets.  It was wonderfully quiet in those days.

I really never imagined I would be able to purchase my own little piece of history just steps away from the historic Exchange building.  In 1997, with my daddy's help (manual labor), I purchased the property and we set about restoring the building.  We did it rather quickly as I needed to move my real estate business to my new location.  We were well into the construction process when I overheard a passerby say, "that was the first office of Susan Pringle Frost".  Daddy and I jumped in the car and raced to the library to confirm what we just heard.  It was true.  Susan Pringle Frost started her real estate business at 9 Broad Street.

9 Broad Street Then and Now

9 Broad Street Then and Now

In Sidney Bland's book Preserving Charleston Past, Shaping its Future he writes, "To be chauffeured to Charleston's slum districts over uneven, ill paved streets by a female realtor, sometimes accompanied by her pet dogs, was an experience few prospective homeowners forgot. Mrs. Uzzell, who purchased on Orange Street said, "Miss Frost appeared behind the wheel of a large and ancient vehicle.  She drove rapidly, never bothering to slow down at corners.  Miss Sue talked all the while at top speed, occasionally turning about to my husband on the rear seat.  Miraculously we arrived safely at the first house."  Isn't that a great visual?

In addition to being Charleston's first female real estate agent, Miss Sue founded the Society for the Preservation of Old Dwellings, later to be called the Preservation Society of Charleston, the oldest community-based historic preservation organization in America.  The United States celebrates National Preservation Month as a way to recognize the impact preservation has on Historical places and communities.

One hundred years later Lois Lane Properties is happy to call 9 Broad Street our "work" home.
